You Were Never There

by Linda Crate

beneath a silver moon
in a velvet black sky
littered with white whispers
of stars
i stared transfixed by the
beauty of it all,
and i turned to say something
to you but you were
already gone;
which i think describes you the entire
time we were together—
you always said the right thing to keep me there,
but you always kept me hanging on;
and i felt my mind wander
i wondered what more i could do for you
because i am always the one that tries to make peoples
lives better even when they're shooting me
in the foot—
just don't have the heart to hate anyone
although there are many people i dislike
i must admit a part of me will always love you
despite all the pain you put me through.
