Saying costumes are scary

when we still find body parts in rivers,

women tied to rocks,

who prove not all murderers

were schooled in proper knots,

or waking up

from another night

reliving last conversations

with dead friends

who bled out in mud, jungle, ocean-

the earth too old to wear

vampire fangs.

 

2. Treat

 

Humans have outlived Neanderthals,

Nero's fiddle solo,

Jack The Ripper's appetite,

Hitler's Nuremberg laws,

but there will always be hungry knives

and hands ready to feed them.
