You as a sunset, I as a wildfire
by Belinda Ahrens
the night the catholic boy falls
in love with the witch-- apples
bruised and preferred that way
so we pull the same card from
the deck and pretend not to
notice the worms writhing out
of our palms-- this is giving in
or settling and we don’t know
which is worse, but we’ll always
keep a codeword and a bat
next to the bed
