it'll be a scream
by Linda M. Crate
all hallow's eve
swimming with memories
i remember the key necklace
once worn
in your company,
but you didn't know enough
to unlock me;
so you kissed me instead—
you told me i didn't have a temper
in efforts to control me,
but i am not someone who can be tamed;
wild and fierce as the wind i will
sing in any way that is mine
you can no longer silence
me—
you buried me in cold, damp earth
but i broke free from the prison that was
your nightmare;
i shed your darkness like snakeskin
but this hallow's eve will be a scream because
i've sent all the haunting to return to sender.
